an early silent film series in which our heroine, Pauline, was left in precarious position at the end of each episode (most recently recycled as a plot trick by Alias!), the beginning of each new one showed how she was rescued/got out of it.

Here's some links if you're curious:

As a kind of film-speak shorthand, though, I used it to mean an episode whose only plot purpose was to put Nikita in some sort of mortal peril, and then watch as she escaped/was rescued - as opposed to a mission with fighting actual terrorists and tough moral questions, for example!

And further, that such a plot inevitably undercut what ever larger arc was going on showing Nikita continuing to develop into the kind of skilled operative and tactician who could indeed be groomed to run Section some day.

Does that help?

(No shame in being new, or having never heard of a 1914 film serial!)

Nell
