Subject: Backstories

This came up in a House-centric discussion on LJ today - the discussion was, basically, whether the show needs to focus more on the other characters (that is, characters other than House) and develop their stories as well. The person I was talking to agrees that the show might suffer if it focuses too much on the central character alone. BtVS was brought up as an example of excellent character development - the show regularly had episodes like Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered (which is a Xander and Cordy episode), or Halloween (which is a Willow episode), or The Zeppo (which is a Xander episode), and so on. And I was wondering - did LFN suffer as a show because it didn't pay sufficient attention to developing the backstories of the other characters? Even Michael had exactly two backstory episodes (MMWK doesn't count) - Simone and Half Life. Is that why the show had to beat the Sex Police storyline to death, because the writers were too damn lazy to think of anything else?
