Thanks for reading.

Walter inhaled deeply as the aroma of chocolate filled the kitchen.

He had enjoyed taking out his old cookbook, assembling the ingredients, rummaging through the cupboards for the muffin tin.

Shaking his head, he quietly decorated the cupcakes, ignoring the little warning bell in the back of his mind.

Nikita blushed as she watched Walter light the candles on the cupcakes he claimed with pride to have made himself from scratch. The hope and tragedy in his eyes tore into her heart as she tried to be happy for him. Birkoff's innocent expression and good wishes were the final cut.

How could she explain to them that this experiment had ended before it had begun? That she had been prepped by Centre to play the game and feign ignorance? That she would never be free of Section, no matter who was orchestrating her actions?

She picked up the cupcake and blew out the candle, but her stomach coiled like a snake in her belly.

"I'm sorry..." she heard herself say, as she set the gaily decorated gift back on the plate.

God, more like Michael every day.
