Convalescing Challenge - Spoilers for "Mother"

Light filters through my eyelids like sunlight through rice paper. My cheeks feel like they're stuffed with cotton balls. I try to move my mouth, but my lips are swollen and stiff. Breathing is an effort.

Is it my imagination, or did I just hear Madeline talking?

Yes, it's her voice, and she sounds like she actually feels something for a change... her tone is almost... kind...

I let my head droop to the right, straining to let myself evaluate the depth of her sincerity, but the moment is over.

A new face comes into focus...

Soft hair, concerned expression, oddly normal clothes, speech laced with quiet remorse - I'm not sure, but I think Michael is trying to apologize.

What difference could it make now? What does it matter who's beating me?

My mother's blows were just as hard when she was drunken mad as Michael's were as soft as he could make them under the circumstances, which is not saying much.

I'm glad I can't see what I look like. The pity in his eyes is as much as I can bear at the moment. Maybe I'll just stay in Medical for as long as I can get away with it. Why not? It's the only time I get treated like a human being.

Fix 'em up so they can shoot 'em down.
