I think any program will have it's devotees that write their own fanfiction. The fact to me is that Trek and SWars had characters that were fun to watch and enjoyable for everyone to emulate. And if you told your friends that you wrote a story based on a tv show, Trek and Buffy and others are well known and therefore more recognisable to the 'normal' people. I remember when I was young it was "What would Kirk do in this situation?" As I am now older it became "let's make them do it thius way for a change."
Or "this is how I saw the character's development or good/bad sides etc."

the connection to LFN is that it was a slick well-made show that only the esoteric percentage are able to grasp. it was not all just thrown at us as food to the cows.
