Especially about the issue of "filling in gaps" being a big motivator.

Sci-fi and fantasy fandoms give you completely different worlds to play in, which is extremely appealing. LFN isn't quite that, but then again the life of secret agents is far enough away from most people's existence that it might as well be a different world. And if you combine the "different world" aspect with a variety of interesting characters, I think you have the basic ingredients for a thriving fandom.
