Elena's voice came quietly from the kitchen.

"Michael?"

He stopped typing and leaned back in his chair, letting the cool autumn sun coming through the breakfast nook casement rest on his closed eyelids.

"Yes?"

She finished stirring in the last of the spices, then covered the soup pot. Her footsteps echoed against the walls, stopping abruptly as she leaned in the doorway to the nook and observed her husband's relaxed pose.

"I think Adam is old enough for Halloween this year. He asked me if he could have a costume and go trick-or-treating with Kevin and Gina."

He opened his eyes and looked at her.

"Do you think it's safe?"

There was something in his voice, something in his eyes that flashed for a split second, something she had seen before: fear. He was always so conservative when it came to Adam, always so over-protective.

"Of course. I wouldn't let him go if I didn't."

He took a deep breath, then leaned forward, exhaling solemnly.

"I'd feel better if you went with him."

She smiled as she admonished him.

"But that's the point. He wants to go with the other kids, not his mother."

He smiled back at her.

"No. I don't want him to go without one of us."

"But why? Why not?"

He stood and walked toward her, taking her in his arms in a loose embrace. She could feel his sigh as she rested her head against his chest. He looked down at the top of her head. The letter from her father, the one Section was preparing, would be sent soon. The Vacek situation was heating up, closing in. This Halloween nonsense was a distraction he didn't need right now. There was enough to worry about without exposing Adam to any unknown factors.

He released her and walked toward the kitchen, pausing to stir the soup pot. Its aroma was truly intoxicating.

"He can go if you go with him."

She knew enough to know when he had made up his mind. Perhaps he was right. Perhaps Adam wasn't old enough. She perked up as she had another thought.

"All right. Now I just have to figure out a costume for myself."

She bounced back with another smile as she watched him replace the pot cover.

"And one for you, my love. I'll bet Nikita would like to come with us. Would you ask her please?"
