Because I have certainly indulged in the practice of lumping female characters into "I like them" and "I don't like them" categories. Then again, I do that with male characters, too.

That's one of the things that defines a fan, I think: an ordinary viewer/reader enjoys the source material for what it is and relates to the source material primarily through the plot, but the fan is compelled to go beyond that and relate directly to the characters in a more personal way. I'm not sure I'm explaining it well, but I think being a "fan" in the fandom sense of the word almost always involves this sort of character judgment.

However, I do understand your point, I think. One rarely comes across discussions asking what characteristics people look for in male characters, even though that "like/don't like" sorting does go on. Instead, people simply talk about "what types of characters" they like or find interesting. Only female characters get their own little ghettoized analysis.
