It's the dead thing.

I mean I know it is not neccesarily this - death has hardly stopped people from writing about Paul or Madeline or Birkoff; or to name some other fandoms - in particular Hornblower, where fic featuring Archie is (or at least was) about well over half of all stuff being produced, long *after* he died in canon.

But, these characters, and others, all had long - series wise - lives with important canon roles to play before they were done in by TPTB.

The biggest problem, I think, with Rene and Jurgen in particular, is that, particularly Rene, they die so *quickly* after we met them.

How they die, in canon, also matters, I suspect. It's really problematic (squeezing out the free time issue aside) to have great romance featuring Michael and Davenport in our closed canon world - because we all saw *Michael* mow him down with a truck, and never apparently, look back, or even think about him again.

Now, if Nikita (that jealous bitch!!!111!!!!) had been driving the truck? I bet it might be different. Just sayin..... ;-)
