Walter found comfort in the gesture. He knew when it happened each time that the team would come back safe…well, as least most of the team would come back safe. Since it had started, fewer ope had been lost than before. Walter allowed it because it meant that someone he cared about, cared about him…It had started not long after Nikita ha come to Section. He had been training her on one of the weapons systems and she had been inattentive and downright bored.

Michael had come by to see how things were going, and Walter had been exasperated with Nikita’s behavior and made an offhand remark about it. Michael had actually reached over and pulled Walter’s ponytail. Walter had been shocked. Michael had never touched him before. The next time it had happened, it was just before a mission that was not expected to succeed. Michael came by Walter’s station to check on something. Walter made some comment about the abeyance ops on the mission and Michael had pulled his ponytail again. The mission succeeded and everyone came back alive.

Since then, just before every mission, when Michael came by Walter’s station he would reach out and give Walter‘s thin ponytail a gentle tug. And the ops mostly came back alive.

On the Shays’ mission, Michael had not ocme by Walter’s station and Nikita and all of the abeyance ops had been lost. After that, Walter had shunned Michael and avoided him. When Nikita had come back alive to Section, Walter once again allowed the small tug on his ponytail. Michael had seemed to know that Walter had forgiven him. When the tugs started again, Michael’s teams were once again successful.

Then, on the mission jist after Nikita was unveiled as a mole for Center and she had given Michael a negative evaluation of his performance in Section, Walter had tried to give Michael a packet that might save his life. Michael refused the packet, thanked Walter, turned and walked away. Michael didn’t come back from the mission because he hadn’t tugged Walter’s ponytail and Walter mourned for his friend.
