Hannah, thanks for your response about the film.

It was a hard film to watch the first time. I think it made more sense the second time. Since it contains flashbacks to incidents that preceded the present time, the viewer must retain the threads of the story and put them together as the film unfolds. Some knowledge of the sacred ways of the natives was explained, but more was needed.

I believed, after viewing the film, that reading the book would be extremely worthwhile, and offer much insight into the story that the film is trying to tell. It seemed to me that the book would have been very much in depth compared to the film, and that perhaps it was the kind of story that is hard to tell on film for that reason. Thus, it would require a writer who could really distill the essence of the story and tell it effectively.

My problem with Roy's part was the inconsistency of his character's temperament. I thought the female lead role suffered from the same malady. I also felt that Roy still doesn't seem all that comfortable with English language roles, which contributed some unevenness to his performance, along with the awkwardness of some of the dialogue. His subdued manner of speaking made it difficult to understand all his lines.

However, his character plays a significant role in revealing the outcome, which I also believe is likely explained in much more detail in the book.
