That is such an interesting point of view. Especially the "secret message" aspect of it.

Mulling it over, I think you have an insight on how some of those (for lack of a better word) "bits" work, since they do seem to communicate more to people who are familiar with the series than they would to someone who was a general reader. It's a variant of how all fan fiction seems to work, as it uses existing characters and situations as "givens," writing variations of those themes, or extending beyond the initial material, but rarely going back to "re-tell" those core ideas.
