I only noticed after I'd heard people already joking about it, and even then only caught it once or twice. Once in one of the episodes in late S2 in the Adrian arc, and once in early S3 during the Vacek arc, if my memory isn't completely foggy. But I know someone who was in on the early nose-whistling discussions and will ask her for more instances. ;-)

To me, it just sounded like really loud breathing through maybe a stuffed up nose. And as I said, some people claim that they don't hear anything. But others heard it quite clearly and it was a very prevalent joke for a while.
