It pokes fun at fans without making fun of them, and as sk said, their devotion helps save the day.

And I'll take this opportunity to pimp a little bit of fic. ;-) Habitation, which is about Fred and Lalieri after the movie, and Artificial Devotion, which is...hard to describe, but flat-out brilliant.
