I loved this column. It made me smile. A few comments on it:

Then, along came Paris. He was the first Star Trek pilot that actually behaved and acted like a pilot! He loved getting behind the controls and trying to push it faster and harder…just like the test pilots of old. I don’t know about you, but when you’re flying one of the most advanced vehicles ever made, I want a guy who actually enjoys his job at the controls, not a button pusher.

It's unfortunate that your points are all true in the series. Fandom, though, has made Sulu into a crack pilot, at least in the books. There are some lovely examples of it in the books.

Ah well. I think you hit your sexy babe quotient with Kira. Love me some Kira. *grin* And what about Communications? Or do they not do that anymore... now that I think about it, they don't. Oh well. Uhura was also a sexy babe.

Yeah, by the time Next Generation rolled around, Communications got folded into Tactical, so it was always Worf saying "Hailing frequencies open."

But, if I had to choose a communications officer, I would have gone with Ensign Hoshi Sato from "Enterprise." As established in the "Enterprise" pilot, she got the gig on the starship because she just happens to be the world's best linguist. All she has to do is hear about 5 sentences of a language, and she's got the jist of it. And, in the time of "Enterprise," the Universal Translator is still an experimental technology, so they wanted a linguist for when the UT failed.

But it never failed that much....

Anyway, I think I made my point, and without succumbing to a "Besides, Hoshi is WAY hotter than Uhura" arguement.

And she is, by the way.

I think I only caught maybe 1/2 an episode of Enterprise, and I'm not even positive of that... I'm pretty sure I had entered into the Years of No TV by then.

Still in those years. Not really missing it. Well, except Law and Order.
