It has been my experience that the kinds of things this article mentions exist to some extent in corporate america. I don't know that it is as dire as the tone of the article, but I do believe that the US should keep an eye on our domestic capabilities - manufacturing, intellectual, etc. Innovation usually is born from more technical persons than managerial. Our friends today may not be our friends tomorrow.

Here, when we discuss projects with senior management and mention that we are planning on outsourcing some/all of it, it is like a chorus starts singing and drowns out all conversation. Cost is no longer an issue (seriously). It is a known fact that they have performance objectives about outsourcing x number of engineering dollars. Meet the objective, get the bonus. What kind of behavior do you think this rewards?

Fortunately, for now, the kind of work we are offloading is more maintenance type stuff than new development. Supposedly, this is the direction we want to keep heading. We also have serious concerns about IP security, especially in China. Most of the work we do is with firms in India.
