i've had a love affair with the thought of becoming a cheese maker -- cows/goats/sheep. The blissful image of a small business creating wonderful unique cheeses from closely managed herds.

Then I remember the 'hobby farm' we had growing up. One beef cow, 2 horses, rabbits, pigeons (for training the dogs) and gardens. No vacations - not even days off to sleep in a little - unless you could find coverage for the animals (not an easy job). Up very early hauling 5 gallon buckets of water for horses because the water trough froze during the day/night - repeated in the evening. Shoveling more manure than I like to remember - which in the winter becomes a frozen block of urine soaked sawdust we chipped into 20-30 pound blocks with one of those metal thingies used to dig ice fishing holes - and transferred to the compost pile. Rabbits that breed like rabbits - and eat their young if you're not careful (tjm can sympathize here - and we didn't do the butchering). A cow that couldn't pass gas so we manually belched with a garden hose until a tube could get put in his side - basically preventing him from blowing up (literally).

Not that I'd trade that work for anything - the work ethic that it instilled is priceless, and the memories and confidence I developed from having those responsibilities makes me part of who I am today.

But wow - what a lot of work for a 'hobby farm' - got to remember, my mom stayed at home full time and dad had another full-time job.

That said, there's always something comforting to me about land...
