At the risk of answering what was a rhetorical question, basically you're talking about media players. I say media bacause now apple has the video ipod. You saw the ipod nano that Kathy and I have. They can play various file formats, mp3 being the audio one you hear most about. Inside the big ipods are hard drives - mechanical devices (i.e. they spin, etc.) that store information via magnetic properties. Smaller than in your PC, but essentially the same. The ipod nano and lots of other mp3 players use solid state technology - flash memory like in your digital camera. Trade off is amount of storage (60G or whatever in the big ipod, 4G in the nano) and price and durability (moving parts are less desirable). I've had a samsung Yepp! mp3 player for several years (128M) - basically you need 1M of memory for 1 minute of music. Talk is cheaper. The advantage of the nano is a superior software interface for the computer, and in my opinion a great user interface on the machine itself (intuitive).
