my brother-in-law is a heating and air conditioning guy working for the state (UW-Stevens Point). He feels that it's generally more efficient to minimize the large swings in heating which is why we do what we do. (and actually - the thermostat is 66 not 65) I just checked.

don't know if that varies based on what kind of heating fuel you use - we use natural gas.
