Tosa schools, in its continuing discussion of the educational issues facing our district is hosting an educational summit tomorrow - 70 invited community members representing many constituencies. I'm attending as a 'member at large' from the community as a whole.

Challenges distilled into sound bites essentially are
(1) declining resident enrollment
(2) support for the decline in resident enrollment with open enrollment participants primarily from Milw. and primarily the children of city workers - who have a residency requirement. This is becoming a less financially advantageous solution to our buget issues.
(3) our allowable increase in spending (2.7% for 04/5) is below the QEO (3.8%) and how we address that issue within the confines of the existing funding law for the state
(4) schools that are older than those in surrounding communities (with the additional accessibility issues and maintenance issues that accompany older buildings - which are beautiful I might add)

If interested - a pretty good community forum set up at

Many really good educational resources linked off this tosa web site - governor's task force on education, public policy forum studies on Ch220 and open enrollment policy, NCLB impact on a reasonably good district (no 'at risk schools).

Having a lazy day today finally gave up feeling guilty about it. Not getting much more than the voy, a little paperwork, and some baking/cooking done.

It's cold, raining, and the house smells of gingersnaps and applesauce. I love fall!
