PROTON WORLD SIGNS OEM AGREEMENT WITH

KEYWARE TECHNOLOGIES.

Integration of Biometric Technology into Smart Card Solutions Enhances

Cardholder Authentication and Identification.

Brussels, 6 July, 2000. Proton World announced today that it had signed an

Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) Agreement with Keyware Technologies,

the world's leading provider of biometric solutions for cardholder authentication

and identification.

Proton World and Keyware Technologies are already established technology

partners. The two companies introduced their proof-of-concept integration of the

Proton e-purse and Keyware's Layered Biometric Verification (LBV.) at the

Smart Card 2000 trade show in London in February 2000, where it won the

Advanced Card Award for the Best New Security Product.

Under the terms of the OEM agreement, the collaboration between the two

companies is extended and strengthened: Proton World will offer an optional

biometrics component, using the Keyware LBV system, as an "add-on" to other

applications in its end-to-end smart card solutions, and gains the right to license

its use by third parties.

The new component will include a Fingerprint Verification Module, developed by

Keyware Technologies, that will read fingerprints, compare them with bio prints

strored on the Proton card, and then send encrypted data to the Proton terminal.

The necessary terminal software development will be done by Proton World and

the interface between the module and the terminal will be designed and

developed by a joint Proton World/ Keyware Technologies development team.

The two companies will create and implement a joint world-wide marketing plan,

including current Proton World licensees.

Dr. Armand Linkens, Managing Director & CEO of Proton World, said " The

security of Proton solutions is admired around the world and we will keep our

position as the market leader in this domain. Biometrics is the next-generation

technique, which will replace PIN codes whilst remaining user-friendly. This

Agreement allows us to respond immediately to requests we have already

received from our licensees in developing countries, and also to offer a range of

security options to new customers, according to their individual requirements."

PRESS RELEASE

Mr. Francis Declerq, President and CEO of Keyware Technologies, said " the

combination of biometric technology and smart cards produces obvious

synergies. Bio prints, such as voice, fingerprint or face, can be easily stored on a

smart card for a variety of security purposes. Keyware is excited to name Proton

World as our newest customer. Together, Proton World and Keyware make

smart card technology more and more secure."

END

Department of Defense Wins Annual Smart Card Alliance Award

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Date posted in ITsecurity.com: 27 April, 2002
Rolling Out to Four Million, DoD’s New Multi-Technology System Secures Facilities and Networks

NEW YORK, April 25 -- The Department of Defense has earned this year’s Outstanding Smart Card Application (OSCA) Award from the Smart Card Alliance. The Smart Card Alliance’s Chairman, Paul Beverly, VP Smart Cards and Systems, SchlumbergerSema, presented the award to Mary Dixon, Director of the Department of Defense Access Card Office and Bill Boggess, Director of the Access and Authentication Technology Division, Defense Manpower Data Center, at the CardTech/SecurTech Industry Awards Reception last night in New Orleans.

The Department of Defense (DoD) identified a clear need within the armed forces to increase security using a card system. The new program will issue up to four million Common Access Cards (CAC), which are multi-application smart cards that include a photo ID and provide authorized physical access to facilities and logical access to the DoD’s computer networks and systems. Currently the CAC issuance system is operational in 300 locations worldwide.

“This is a very exciting award for us and a very powerful enabling technology for the Department of Defense,” said Dixon. “This technology allows us to secure our unclassified networks and aggressively pursue the implementation of many electronic business applications.”

“I'm proud to present the Outstanding Smart Card Application Award to the Department of Defense’s Access Card Office. This application really illustrates the power of smart cards as an integrated security technology,” said Beverly. “The immense scale of the CAC application demonstrates that smart cards can be distributed and administered on a global enterprise level. The DoD CAC shows how multiple vendors can coexist and that multi-application technology exists today. Their entry conveys the formidable challenge the Department of Defense faced and how they met the challenge with the CAC smart card technology.”

About the OSCA
Each year the Smart Card Alliance, in an ongoing effort to stimulate innovation in smart card technology, recognizes a user organization for its effective implementation of a smart card program. Such innovative applications provide new growth ideas within the industry and will build stability for future successes. Each year the Alliance turns to its members to identify projects worthy of recognition for receiving the Outstanding Smart Card Application Award. The 2002 judging panel was comprised of: Jane Adams, journalist; Jerry Ashworth, Editor, Report on Smart Cards; Shalini Chowdhary, Analyst, Frost & Sullivan; Joe Clark, Smart Card Authority; Don Davis, Editor,Card Technology Magazine; Theresa Ward, Editor in Chief, Intelcard News; and Jeff Kutler, Senior Editor, Institutional Investor.

About the Smart Card Alliance
The Smart Card Alliance is a not-for profit, multi-industry association of member firms working to accelerate the widespread acceptance of multiple applications for smart card technology. Through specific projects such as education programs, market research, advocacy, industry relations, and open forums, the Alliance keeps its members connected to industry leaders and innovative thought. The Alliance is the single industry voice for smart cards, leading industry discussion on the impact and value of smart cards in the U.S. For more information please visit www.smartcardalliance.org.

American Express Uses Chip Cards And Biometrics At Headquarters

American Express Co., whose headquarters are across from the site of the destroyed World Trade Center towers, has stepped up security at its offices using biometrics and smart cards. Employees use contactless smart cards to gain access to the building entrance and must authenticate themselves with chip cards and fingerprint biometrics at high-security doors within the building. The fingerprint scanners are supplied by Toronto-based Bioscrypt Inc. Bioscrypt and AmEx have been working together for more than a year, and a fingerprint system has been in place "for a significant time," says Julia Webb, marketing vice president for Bioscrypt. Other AmEx facilities may be using the technology soon, she adds. AmEx's headquarters building was damaged during the Sept. 11 terrorist attack, and several AmEx employees working in a nearby building were killed.
