LITHUANIA GOES SMART CARD ID DOCUMENTS
Lithuania's four million inhabitants won't have much longer to wait for their new identity documents. Munich-based technology group Giesecke & Devrient (G&D) completed a personalization centre for various identity documents in Vilnius, Lithuania, on October 1 of this year. Personalization consists of engraving the citizen's personal details into the document whether identity card, passport or driving license. An initial volume of one million passports, 1.5 million identity cards and 500,000 driving licenses in card format are to be personalized in the next two years. Revenue from the project, in which G&D is prime contractor, will be around EUR 4million. The first documents are to be issued before the end of this year."We're highly satisfied with how the project has progressed. G&D delivered the advanced systems for personalization of passports and modern identity cards in smart card format on schedule, and has fully lived up to its reputation as a proven expert for security solutions", commented Prof. Dr. Anatolijus Rimkevicius, Undersecretary of State in Lithuania's Ministry of the Interior.
