Hypercom's ICE Makes History ... Advanced Card Terminals Get First Ever Global Certification for JCB's J/Smart Cards

-- Greater Protection Against Card Fraud

-- Worldwide Joint Marketing Arrangement

Hypercom Corp. (NYSE:HYC) the leading global provider of electronic payment solutions, today announced that JCB has certified the EMV kernel for Hypercom(R) ICE(TM) card payment terminals for use worldwide with JCB's J/Smart credit cards.

This marks the first time JCB has certified any payment terminal manufacturer for J/Smart outside of Japan, and the first time they have given anyone a global certification. JCB's J/Smart cards along with Hypercom terminal technology provide significantly greater protection against credit card fraud.

The EMV kernel is certified for use with all of Hypercom's ICE terminals including the ICE 5500, 4000, 6500 and 6000 models. The J/Smart certified EMV kernel is immediately available, and the first J/Smart installations outside Japan were made earlier this year in the United Kingdom using Hypercom ICE 5500 terminals.

Technology Leaders Join in Global Marketing Effort

Hypercom also announced a worldwide joint marketing arrangement with JCB to promote the acceptance of J/Smart cards and the sale of J/Smart-enabled Hypercom payment terminals worldwide.

The two companies have many mutual customers and complementary relationships with acquirers and processors around the world. Of particular importance are customers based in not only the United States and Europe, but also in Brazil, Costa Rica, Taiwan, Malaysia and Korea.

Worldwide Support Now Possible to Fight Credit Card Fraud

"This is a significant step for JCB's EMV migration in the global marketplace," said Masahiro Omoto, senior vice president and head of IC strategy, JCB International.

"We are very excited with this achievement by Hypercom. With the certification of Hypercom's EMV kernel and ICE terminals, acquirers and processors worldwide can now fully support the J/Smart card, and that is very important to our customers."

Since it is a smart card, J/Smart provides significantly greater protection against credit card fraud. It virtually eliminates many types of fraud, and in particular skimming. Credit card fraud is a major problem for issuers, merchants and consumers, and skimming is one of the most rapidly growing types of fraud.

"JCB's first-ever global certification of Hypercom's ICE technology further demonstrates our leadership in support of smart bank cards and solutions that fight credit card fraud," said Chris Alexander, chairman and CEO, Hypercom Corp. "Together with JCB, our fast, smart card transaction technologies are tightening the `noose' on the criminals who perpetrate card fraud."

ICE: Another Hypercom First In The Industry And Technology Breakthrough

In addition to being the first to achieve global certification for J/Smart, Hypercom was the first POS terminal vendor to achieve EMV Level 2 certification and the first to certify three terminals to Level 2.

Recently Hypercom introduced BioPIN, a technology that generates a new type of PIN from an individual's finger. When combined with a credit card, BioPIN virtually eliminates the risks of skimming and lost or stolen credit or debit cards.

Hypercom's high-performance ICE product line delivers a range of powerful capabilities such as Internet connectivity, touch screen graphics displays, smart card readers, motorized check readers and integrated jam proof SureLoad(TM) receipt printers.

In addition to secure payment applications and electronic signature and receipt capture, the terminal supports a range of value-added applications and services like check verification, check guarantee or electronic check conversion.

Other possibilities are available on ICE terminals such as e-mail, on-screen advertising, interactive electronic coupons and cash management reporting through Hypercom's Web-enabled ePOS-infocommerce(R) (epic(TM)) framework.

The ICE payment terminals also incorporate physical security features and Hypercom's HyperSafe(TM) operating system. HyperSafe integrates firewall-protected, multi-tasking, multi-application functionality along with EMV chip card capability and secure software downloading. All ICE models are both HyperWare(R) and SPOS-capable.
