RUSSIAN SMART CARDS
Visa international has cooperated with The Bank of Moscow, card manufacturer Rosan Finance and the Moscow metro to launch a complex new multi-application smart card project. Around 1.7 million of the cards incorporate a Mifare contactless chip for use on the metro system. Other organizations have joined the scheme and have added welfare benefits on 21,000 cards. In addition to the metro, the cards can be accepted at 200 stores and 100 ATM’s. For payment, Bank of Moscow has added Visa Electron debit functionality. At present, the payment application is held in the magstripe on the cards, but it will soon be moved to the chip – which will have a dual contact/contactless interface based on EMV specifications – to improve security.
