English rugby fans to carry smart cards
11/02/2003
The Rugby Football Union (RFU) is to issue members of the newly formed England Rugby Supporters Club (ERSC) with smart cards as part of a drive to develop stronger relationships with rugby fans.

The world's first smart card based scheme for national sports body membership scheme will be launched as England scrum down for the crunch RBS Six Nations opener against holders France on February 15th. The ERSC, sponsored by Lloyds TSB, expects to issue 25,000 cards in the first year.

The card, designed and developed by Teamcard, the first smart technology business focused on sport, will be accepted in retail outlets across the land, such as Safeway, Allders and Moto. Fans will accumulate reward points that can be redeemed against official RFU products, match tickets or ERSC membership renewal.

Tom Hill, the ERSC's new general manager, explains: "We are determined to give ERSC members real value for money, and to keep adding value as we develop the club. The card will deliver more and more benefits as time goes on."

The RFU is the first sporting organisation outside football to introduce a smart card scheme - reflecting the growth of professionalism and commercialisation within rugby. Football clubs such as Bolton, Chelsea, Crystal Palace and Millwall already use the technology to reward fans and gather precious customer details.

TeamCard's retail partners will benefit from an influx of new card holders from high income groups.

Brian Hawkins, TeamCard's MD, said: "The membership scheme will modernise the relationship between the RFU and the fans for the professional era. A card based membership scheme gives the RFU the chance to build upon a long-lasting and mutually rewarding relationship beyond irregular home games."
