automated alice presents…

11th September 2003
The Brudenell Social Club

Calvin Johnson
Herman Dune
The Cribs
The Seven Inches

The indie pop svengali Calvin Johnson over the last couple of decades, has played in or produced some of the best bands ever ever ever. His own bands were the legendary Beat Happening, Dub Narcotic and Halo Benders and he’s also worked with (amongst others) Beck, Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Sleater Kinney, Lois, Heavenly, Built to Spill and The Make Up, not to mention all the countless bands on his kick ass record label K records. He released a solo album, ‘What Was Me’ last year, “features Johnson exclusively, in about the barest format you could imagine - either voice and an acoustic guitar or just voice, acapella. He's in torch singer-/campfire balladeer-mode, leaving the funky struts and giddiness of his other groups aside in favour of more stately, refined singing in the tradition of the jazz and pop vocalists of yesteryear.” This is going to be special!

The Herman Dune have played Leeds a few times in the last year and are (unlike the hives)everyone's new favourite band. “A band that touches upon territory occupied by both Belle & Sebastian and Will Oldham, and charmed with its reinvention of the English language as poetry.”

The Cribs are from Wakefield and the airs to toilet roll millions. The play energetic f*cking ace pop punk. Extremely catchey, I guarantee you’ll still remember their songs weeks later.

Leeds’ favourite indie pop beat combo The Seven Inches’ will be playing acoustic as little drummer boy Nigel is in Italy.
