Subject: To propose a theory
So this theory popped into my head the other day. Tell me what you think.
Two groups exist, conservatives and liberals.
I believe that the less educated are conservatives and the more educated are liberals - as a general rule of thumb. Also it seems that more conservatives are Christians than liberals. This would follow with a conclusion that Christians may tend to be less educated and liberals more educated. Would it then be that Christians have faith in God because they are less educated? Or that non-Christians don't because "they know more about the world?"
Let me know so I can have some feedback on this developing theory of mine. I am not meaning to insult anyone with this, so don't be insulted or demeaned in any way.

Hey Josh,
Great theory. Personally, I question your assumption. I honestly don't think that you can break people into "conservatives and liberals." If you can, I"m curious as to where you think you stand. Where do you think I stand, where do you think the rest of our friends stand?
Assuming your assumption is true though, I'm going to have to disagree for the following reasons.
1.) School started with Religion. Clergy became educated...so most school started with Religion.
2.) Pastor's in the LCMS go to school for 8 years, and that's not 8 years of only Bible talk. That's 8 years of school, be it biology or otherwise. Regardless, I know a crapload of uber-smart Christians, (I'm aware this may be a moot point seeing as how I go to a Christian school of higher learning)
In other ways I do agree with you. Most of it on the grounds of faith though.
Faith isn't always logical. There is nothing logical about some guy named Jesus being born of a virgin. That just doesn't happen, kids are a result of sex, and if you can find some other way to do it, I'm all ears.
How about people being raised from the dead? The parting of the Red Sea, "the sun stopped shining," Turning water into wine. Etc. Faith has a lot to do with just that...faith. Which is what makes religion so freaking sweet. Christianity isn't just for smart people who are liberals. It's for all people. Liberals, conservatives, super smart, super dumb, dumb, deaf, blind, retarded, special needs, alzheimers, parkinsons, children, old people, and rocking Flatfoot 5ifty6ix fans like us. :)
Those be my thoughts. I was going to bring up a crap load of philosophy, because I'm taking a Philo. class this semester, but I don't want to create more quesitons than I could possibly answer.
Hope I didn't write to much.

Can you believe it, this is the first time I've ever posted on the forum? Crazy isn't it?? Well, Steve pointed out this question of Josh's and it really got me thinking. I'm in a politics course right now so we've been talking a lot about this stuff and I just read a book that talks specificly about this question. I thought Josh would like to hear it. The book by the way is called Letters to a Young Conservative by Dinesh D'Souza.
"Consider Harvard's black studies program. Its spectrum of opinions ranges from liberal to radical-left. There are no conservatives in the department. Is this because there are no conservative academics good enough for Harvard? Not at all. Thomas Sowell at the Hoover Institution has arguably produced more original work than half of Harvard's black studies department. Some of the liberals at Harvard are utterly mediocre figures who would be teaching at a community colleges if they weren't liberal and they weren't black. Sowell, too, is an African American, but he is the wrong kind of African American. Despite his prodigious scholarship, he falls outside the range of acceptable opinion in those quarters.
So part of the reason for the liberal bias in academia-especially in the humanities and social sciences-is that the academy reflects a temperamental and ideological self-selection at work. But there is a second reason why professors, as a group, tend to be liberal. They have a visceral hostility to capitalisn, one of the reasons why so many once found themselves attracted to Marxism (and some are still). Not that they find Marx's theories about surplus value or his predictions about the future to be particularly convincing. They turn to Marxism as a vehicle for expressing their animus toward capitalism."
(That last comment was mainly for Josh to show you how messed up some liberals acutally are.)
Anyway, I think that sums up your question pretty well. The thing is that most liberals go into academia type of feilds while most conservatives go into more business type of feilds. I can't really explain it, it's just what happens.
And following off of Tim's statement, I do think that there are either liberals or conservatives. People aren't always way right or way left. There is a lot of middle ground. That is where most of the people in today's world are. You can hold some liberals ideals and some conservative ideals. Frankly, that is where I am at. I see myself as a moderate conservative if you want a specific classifacation. And if you want to chat, I'll tell you where I see you at. I hope this helps you out.
