FINAL GRADES: NOT "FLEXIBLE" and NO "FAVORS"
Two students separately approached me regarding their grades this week. Both explained that nothing less than A is needed. This occurs each semester, with about about a dozen students approaching me over several weeks with clear explanations that an A is needed for : grad school, GPA requirements, financial aid, scholarship, internship, family expectations, graduation, job program, etc. Some simply want their grade raised from B- to B, F to D, etc., with the rationale that professors shouldn't mind changing grades if there's a "good" reason. Some students have gone so far as to say, if their grade is not raised or changed, their entire academic careers will be ruined, jeopardized, they will not graduate, etc.
Please note: I *DO NOT ADJUST GRADES* and do not appreciate these kinds of requests. In fact, it causes the opposite effect-- negative impressions of you and your work. Invariably, students and faculty hear that some have gotten their grades changed for a variety of reasons. This is a slippery slope and an ethical problem for all. To raise your grade-- attend all classes, do your work, and participate actively.
