Before all those from Coventry start I am not being a sore loser after yesterdays game. A few months ago I thought we wouldn’t have a team and I know we will lose a few games this year although I am sure we will finish in the top 3. I know the weather was bad and the pitch wet but that was the same for both sides and we made more mistakes than you on the day. A few years ago we would have prayed for that sort of day when our forwards could have dominated as yours did at first.
But the law that I feel lost it today was THE UNCONTESTED SCRUM LAW.
With all the bad feeling we have had between our teams what with accusations of radio links in our scrum caps etc. I guess it had to be these two teams that had a game spoilt by this law.
Just when our forwards had begun to take control and Colin was coming on the field as a replacement prop your replacement hooker left the field. If he was injured or if you made clever use of a very bad law we will never know. It did seem to be convenient timing that he had to leave just when you were under pressure with a scrum close to your line.
All that aside we all must have seen that this law is desperately in need of alteration.
1 At the start of the game you have to name 2 players who will play as hookers and when both these are injured noncontested scrums come into the game. This possibly means that as far as the referee is concerned it does not matter if your number 8 did offer to play there
I am not sure if he was even allowed to do so. In this case he was quickly told to shut up but if the roles had been reversed and you had been taking control I wonder if he would have been allowed to play there by his team-mates
2 How many of us knew that not only were you not allowed to push under these laws but also YOU ARE NOT EVEN ALLOWED TO STRIKE if the other side has the put in. The first part is acceptable as the safety of the players must be the first consideration but the second is just a joke.
3 You had had a player sent off for a swinging arm to the head on a player who was almost through your defence. I know a lot of us can not see anything wrong in what our own players do but I am sure all rugby fans hate to see this type of action which could have resulted in serious injury BY ANY PLAYER ON EITHER SIDE. Yes I am straying from the subject but his actions on leaving the field could well have constituted another offence requiring action by a stronger referee. But when the noncontested scrum law came into force we lost most of the advantage from the extra man as we still packed 8 men against your 7. I can only assume this was a requirement of the law as surely we would have played one as a back. We could not even have substituted one of our forwards for a back as we hadn’t another one left on the bench. We had chosen a forwards bench with 80 minutes of contested scrums expected and with the use of rugby league scrums we were robbed of their use.
How long will it be before a side with a weak pack, as by this time you had although admitted not at the start of the game use these tactics regularly to win games. I suppose we could all say that if it is in the laws you can do it and I suppose I have to agree but yesterday shows that the law in this case needs amending so as to retain the safety parts but also not to be able to be used as a method of saving struggling forwards. I just hope that when you come here the game will be played in a less controversial manner and of course that no player gets INJURED FROM EITHER SIDE.
