Subject: Undergraduate program in media art/communication study

Since County asked about undergraduate programs in media art/communication study through email eariler on, I would love to start a new thread on this topic here.

First of all, I will share my own experience:

I went to Rhodes College - a liberal arts school- for my undergraduate program. There are no majors on media art/communication study; however, our students have the freedom to conduct their own majors by handing in a proposal in the end of their 2nd year. This way, there can be as many possiblities as possible! Besides students can choose double or even triple majors, as long as their schedule and ability allow.

I chose CS and Art during my 2nd year. One of the reasons is I hated the fact that I could not take both Science and Arts in Hong Kong secondary school. Another reason is my professor: Val Valgardson, who really is a Renaissance man and loves making art in the form of electronics. He mainly teaches sculpture courses in our school. Recently, he got approved to conduct a course with the Physics department together about ROBOTIC ART. Due to his background(e.g. the MFA program he went to, his teachers...), he has lots of focus on the conceptual development for his students. "The most important component is the idea ... You can always get the technique if you are willing to," he said. I agree with him and thus also agree with Wolfgang's approach for our media class: get our brain working for different ideas first and solve the technical problems afterwards.
