Subject: Healthcare System in the Philippines, politically oriented

E. Falcon, RN, MD etc

To all my colleagues in the Nursing & Medical Profession

I am a physician, a specialist, a succesful practitioner and a green card holder too, who went into NURSING. I am just waiting to take my NCLEX which I don’t see a big obstacle on my way.

A healthy nation has a good healthcare system and education. That is what I learned from the nursing school, a school I don’t even dream of enrolling if I am new graduate from high school. But I am very grateful as " second courser or a physician" the big school in nursing will not accept me even if studied in UP or UST, for that matter a board passer in flying colors with my specialty. I think the big school is so bureaucratic and professionally jealous that we are invading their profession (that is their own words) of course they will not accept it. Well, Education is a basic right, period

Now you will see in the board exams, topnotchers came from the nowhere land nursing schools! Definitely it is not leakage, teachers nor nowhere land nursing schools. It is us students. Our mentors are EXCELLENT and they don’t have a hard time teaching us nursing for obvious reason. The Traditional Nurses knows that too and it is inevitable.

Nursing is still fresh in me as a student. As a physician, a specialist, a teacher, battle hardened surgeon in all sort of medical and surgical exercises, maybe my opinion regarding Philippine Nursing education will be summarized as slow, not globally oriented and politically oriented just like the PMA. As if you conclude anything FILIPINO is politically oriented. Maybe spiced with some tsismis from chief nurse here and there like Kris Aquino nowadays.

The Nursing system is runned like an amiga system, the deans, the chief nurses, the BON are all amigas because one way or another they belong to the same school, same age group, same post grad school at UP. UE, UST wasting their time to learn NAMDA at the same time, leaving behind what is due to the "nursing education for the nursing student" Please excuse me that is my opinion and how I perceive it since I am at the profession for a long time.

It is still fresh in me when I studied my nursing; I was awaken that the real nursing is spent for the last two years! The first two years is a waste of money (devised by CHED?). Then the real nursing education is peppered with irrelevant, out of tune emphasis in nursing history, COPAR, and other diluting topics in nursing. If I am going to summarize it I am just barely using 30% of my nursing education in the Philippines to pass the US Board. So don’t tell us that the nursing education is going down. You are to slow to adapt to the changing environment in nursing globally. We are now in the technically oriented nursing care. Even US Nurse graduate had a hard time digesting this, on top of learning medical terminology, anatomy, microbiology, physiology, pharmacology etc. My computer knowledge is as good as staring on the computer by itself.

Whether Nursing is fast becoming independent practice and the profession is devising her own lingo like client to a patient, Nursing Diagnosis to a Medical Diagnosis, We nurses cannot get away from the medical world and its advances.

My Nursing colleagues in the Philippines, Deans, Chief Nurses and the people running the show of nursing education we are running behind! The Nursing Education like Medicine as a profession is tinted with politics like the F#@%ing politicians screwing the Filipino people.

Medical Information, Nursing Information change ten fold every year! As a teacher you have to digest that too to become effective teacher. How many can afford to study M.A.N as you described it in order to teach? If you are intellectually honest give the nursing education what is due to them and stop politics!

Our life in the Philippines is diluted, poisoned with a lot of things that will not improve the quality of life of every Filipinos. The politicians and the voters, they mix nicely to put the country into drain. As a Nation, We simply don’t have a focused direction in that includes the Nursing Education !

I am chatting here because that is my obligation to speak out. This forum will be probably effective if you concentrate in helping our poor, exploited nurses in the Philippines rather chika chika, where are you, how are you, I am here topics.

Please don’t be offended, somebody must be a contrabida to put us in one direction.

Thank you

Edmund Falcon, MD, RN, BSN, BS Psycho, certified MA, Fellow PSOHNS etc....and all that useless vowels and consonants we are fond of putting in our name

as you all know it has been all over the news that there is a shoratge of nurses not only in the u.s. but also in europe and in the middle east. they have been very happy so far with the services of the filipino nurses.
in this regard, i would like to request your association for a list of contact hospitals wherein we can send nurses to. this will greatly be appreciated and for sure will be of great help to a lot of our fellow countrymen (the nurses and their families.

thank you very much and please respond through my email. again, thanks.

I can help. I own and run a nurse staffing company and am just starting a recruitment project now for 10 nurses for a hospital on the east coast of the U.S. I need nurses with 2-3 years acute care med surg with some ICU and ventilator experience. My customer will take the nurses without the NCLEX and will help school them to pass it-really great!
Can you refer RN's to me?
Thank you for your help,

There are thousands of RNs in the Philippines, but the main problem is satisfying the VisaScreen imposed by the US. While it is true that many are able to satisfy said VisaScreen, they are still a minute number compared to the 20,000 nursing school graduates that the Philippines produces every year. The major of the many reasons for not satisfying said requirement is 'financial'. Consequently, the majority of nursing graduates end up as (sad but true) 'carfegivers', domestic helps or nursing assistants in foreign countries.

What is needed is for Filipinos in the US (Nurses?) to "invest" in their "kababayans" by making "advances" for "qualified" Philippine RNs in exchange for a "management agreement". The "investor" is guaranteed to get back the investment plus a good size profit (thru direct deposit salary deduction).

Kapatirang Pilipino sa Ibayong Dagat, Inc. (www.kapatiran.org), a non-profit organization of Filipinos overseas conducts pre-qualifying examinations for nurse-applicants and recommends "scholars" to "investors". Kapatiran also oversees accredited review centers for both CGFNS, NCLEX, TOEFL/TWE, TSE, and now IELTS & TOEIC.

Let us invest in our nurse-kababayans, and make a little profit for ourselves. The PNAA may be able to help by tying up with Kapatiran on this worthwhile project.

On another move that the Kapatiran has done, which the PNAA can truly help a lot, is ---- making representation to the NCSBN to include the Philippines as a "test site" for NCLEX. In October 2002, NCSBN made a decision to authorize "test centers" outside of the US & its territories, BUT DID NOT INCLUDE THE PHILIPPINES in the initial list. (NCLEX tests may start as early as October 2004) Kapatiran has made representations citing the fact that MAJORITY of NCLEX test takers in the last 2 years were Filipino nurses and that they have to spend a lot just to take tests in Saipan and Guam.

Can we work together on this issue?

Maraming Salamat Po!

Rose and other Filipino colleague in the Nursing profession

You are deceived to believe that a recruiter will help you.

A recruiter will help you if you are worth it! Meaning you are done with your NCLEX, CGFNS, English Test that even an American born citizen has to pass.

Here are some points to ponder:
1. A recruiter can easily earn 10,000 dollars just to launch you in the hospital per head.

2. If you are worthless they dump you, a typical American dog eats dog, and I survive first before you do strategy.

3. In America don’t trust anyone. Have you been in a car dealership lately?

4. That is the reason why some recruiter will invest in your NCLEX, CGFNS, Kaplan review just to entangle with a CONTRACT. If you are attracted with sweet promises and you found a good job than what she offers, watch out! Breach of contract will haunt you down!

5. DO NOT GO INTO CONTRACT unless you know what you are doing

6. If you don’t trust an American recruiter do not trust 100x a Filipino recruiter. I bet you will be eaten up. Except for this Filipino recruiter in Florida, they are helpful to you even if you are worthless (we were students of nursing during that time). They are transparent in their business. They even guide you what to do about recruiters!

7. They will hide to you other perks that you deserve to receive as a nurse like sign in bonus, housing and food allowance, gas allowance just to survive and transplant to their locality.

Aren’t you glad to be a nurse? You are just following the law of supply and demand. Use it to your advantage because it will die down later.

Happy hunting Rose

With all these frenzy, hunting down a nurse and passing the NCLEX or CGFNS, we group of Doctors with RN degree are planning to put up a Crusade to help Filipino Nurses now in America to pass that NCLEX sanely. We hold the review for Filipinos for free as a token of appreciation to our Filipino colleagues who help us. They don’t even represent a Nursing Organization. Just like our own PMA, PNA is more of a political and a social club. As we analyze the examination, we concluded it is a fair, considerate examination compared to the examinations we encountered in our medical life as a frequent examinee from medicine down to the specialty board exams. Kudos to NCLEX!

If you will analyze the examination it is intricately interwoven with common Pathophysiology of diseases with Maslow hierarchy and Growth and Development of a person in one question. Just priorities and you will get it right! Of course you need a basic idea of microbiology, pharmacology (drugs commonly used in the US) and medical terminology.

Good Luck my fellow Nurse. We should practice our profession in real life – a CARING individual

Greetings. I'm a Filipino MBA graduate from Columbia University and I've recently moved to LA to do my internship. I would like to know if there are Filipino nurses or other medical practitioners in the LA area who are looking for somebody to share an appartment with. My observation w/ Pinoy nurses in NYC is that they typically rent out appartments and divide the rooms among themselves and I was wondering if the same is true in SoCal. My only requirements are:

1. W/in walking distance to a bus station that can take me to LA city proper. I'm willing to go as far as West Covina but of course, the nearer the better.

2. Available appliances such as laundry machine, refrigerator, and stove/microwave.

3. Reasonable price for the distance.

4. Willing to rent out up to end-of-December only.

5. Generally clean living.

If you have any leads, please send me an e-mail at: aar2014@yahoo.com

Thanks.

If I were one of the nursing leaders in the Philippines right now, I will encourage all nursing schools to disqualify anybody who applies for nursing education who is currently licensed to practice in the health care industry at a higher level than nursing in the Philippines, and encourage policy makers to make that as a permanent LAW or POLICY. Now if they are doctors and would like to seek nursing education abroad outside the Philippines, then that is their option. People might have all kinds of freedom but with freedoms, there will be sets of limitations to set things straight, minimize confusion and all kinds of conflicts in order to maintain peace, more freedom and order. Laws are formulated if the rights of other individuals, groups, institutions, professions, etc. are threatened and need protection from any forms of harm. Otherwise there are always confusion, chaos and fights if all people are allowed to do what they want to do without limitations and restrictions (or LAWS, RULES, and REGULATIONS).. We don't want people to get out of control beacuse of too much freedom who will eventually hurt other people or any form of equilibrium. Everybody should be able to make sense of what it takes to be a free person with human rights and privileges in a democratic country granted by the constitution..

There is an on-going concern among "our beloved mentors/teachers/professors" back home in the Philippines I read a couple of weeks ago on-line in one of the major Philippine national newspapers. Our Filipino nursing leaders noted a decline in the quality of Philippine nursing education since there has been a growing number of Filipino nursing educators or experts or teachers that left the country inorder to seek better opportunities abroad. Knowing that this could affect us, the Filipino nurses, and the kind of care we are giving to our clients including the healthy and the sick Filipinos in the Philippines, would this be a big concern to the PNAA and the entire community of Filipino nurses in the Philippines, in the US and in other countries abroad? What do you guys think? What are we going to do about it?

The concern for the deteriorating nursing education is highly appreciated. While it may affect the quality of future nurses in the Philippines and the quality of patient care, on a broader perspective, there is not much we, who are here abroad, can do to improve the quality of nursing education.

I believe the solution is highly political, social and economical in perspective.

The exodus, some call it hemorrhage of Filipino nurses, of highly trained and qualified nursing instructors from the Philippines to developed countries is primarily motivated by economic reasons. While educators have the inherent love for teaching, I believe WE cannot let opportunities pass for our own future and our children's too.

If only the government can do something, I believe there is a better way to manage this problem. Nurses would not leave the country if WE can live comfortably there. Unfortunately, there's nothing they can do. CHED (Commission on Higher Education) keeps on approving schools to offer nursing - even with the knowledge that there are Deans or instructors who are not qualified. DOH nor PNA is not doing anything to improve the plight of our nurses back there.

And even if they do, the bottom line is...Philippines cannot provide the same opportunities offered in other countries. And while the "committed instructors" would want to devote their time to teaching, "what the future can bring them" shall and forever be the main reason of this exodus of nurses.

PS.

I can empathize because I was a nursing instructor for 10 years, the last 2 years were spent productively as a Dean in one of the top universities in the Philippines. Just came to the USA with my family in 2002 as immigrants.

It's a free site hosted by US doctors and nurses to help foreign nurses immigrate and work in US. Quite interesting.

Hello PNAA,

I am a graduate student at NYU who is doing research for an article on the international recruitment of nurses, in particular Filipino nurses who are brought to London and New York City, for a magazine called The Next American City (please refer to www.americancity.org if you would like to find out more about this periodical). What is of interest to me is the movement of these nurses between developed countries, especially in a time of supposed global nursing shortages. If anyone has any insights into this situation, or knows of someone who has followed this migratory pattern, I would appreciate the chance to have a phone conversation or email exchange. I can be reached via email at cdc234@nyu.edu.

Thank you,

Cheryl Ching

Dear nursing colleagues,

Greetings from the Tar Heel State! On January 15-17, 2004, PNAA and PNA-Manila will hold the prestigious 4th International Nursing Conference in the capital city of Manila, Philippines. I will provide a link to the conference website while we await PNAA to create the official website. Here it is:

http://www.geocities.com/reggiedoc//PhilIntlNrsgCon.htm

I would encourage the committees involved to email me with details so we can advertise and promote well ahead of time. Your assistance is greatly appreciated to make this event truly international in scope. Thank you very much!

Very sincerely,

Dear PNAA members,

I am a doctoral student conducting a research on the labor market experiences of foreign nurses in the U.S. I am particularly interested in looking at whether foreign nurses are able to build a career out of their temporary migration status and what type of support institutions they rely on to do this. I am based in Boston and would appreciate any references to organizations that support foreign nurses in the U.S. either around Boston or anywhere in the east coast. Of course, I am already in contact with PNAA but curious to know whether there are other such associations, perhaps for Indian/Irish/Haitian nurses? Are there American groups that have supported foreign nurses in a concrete way?

Many thanks,

Kyoung-Hee

Kyoung-Hee,

Did you ever discover any organizations supporting foreign nurses in the Boston area?
