Hi Deidra

Your posting is timely, as I've recently been "encountering" a lot of animals too - most notably black cats (domestic) and panthers (non-domestic) and just yesterday an elephant!

First the Hyena. I really got interested in hyenas about four years ago. Perhaps because I identified with them as being a much misunderstood species with a wrong bad press. And I love the way they laugh! Investigating them a bit, I found what wonderful social animals they are; that they don't scavange - indeed it is usually the lions who scavange off the hyenas' kill. It also intrigued me that a female hyena was as large if not larger than her male counterpart and that she also has a clitoris of equal size to the male's penis! There's not that much written about them, but the world of wild life is beginning to explore them further and better, giving them the "good" press they deserve.

As for the black cats and elephant...well, they are both very long stories. But suffice it to say that I feel I have BOTH their natures in me and try and draw on both when needed. However, the two natures are difficult to handle because of their often opposing natures. I don't know if this will make sense to you, but it feels as if the elephant is my body and my "mother" side: slow, gentle, sturdy, heart-broken, yet loving fun in squirting water and playing. She also has big ears and, of course, never forgets. This isn't a mind thing only - the body never forgets. This elephant connection has been a recent "event".

The black cat/panther connection has been a more long-term occurence, and I'm wondering if that is more my male/mind/fiery side. I had a "shamanic" experience once where I WAS a black panther, embodied (not just a visualisation). I/she was so, so beautiful - slow, strong, sleek, gorgeous thick black fur. Then some male hunters came with their spears and I fell into a crippling and sad wound of her indignity and incomprehension at being thus hunted.

Black cats are everywhere in my life, and indeed I used to own one at one time. The other night I inadvertently caught the eyes of my neighbour's black cat full on and - wham! - there was a meeting in Being!!! I see black cats as the fiery side of my nature, fierce, sometimes lashing out in my/its wounds, sometimes so soft and purring away, loving to laze around in the sun and be stroked.

I could say more.... But first tell me about your animals!

Much love,

Gill x
