May 8 is the last date to register/pay for the CA Spring Feis without incurring a late fee. To register, please visit www.feisworx.com. Also, May 8 is the last date to book rooms at the Holiday Inn (next door to the feis) and the Four Points by Sheraton (across the street from the feis) at the great rate of $99 per night. The Feis will be held at the same great location, the South San Francisco Conference Center (just minutes away from the San Francisco Airport with excellent access to the freeways) www.ssfconf.com. Both Virgin America and Southwest Airlines will be providing service from SFO to Orange County at the time of our feis. (Low-cost carriers JetBlue, Southwest, and Virgin America all provide services into SFO – from Long Beach, LAX, San Diego, Denver, Phoenix, Seattle… just to name a few.) Our tentative schedule is as follows: All Championships, Championship Specials, all Adult Competitions will be held on Sunday, May 24. White Trash Invades Irish Dance Competition
If you have never been to a Feis, or Irish dance competition you have definitely missed out on a rare experience.
Unlike many competitions you find yourself surrounded with children of all ages dressed in elaborate dresses, with costs averaging around $2,000.00 each. For the boys the proper attire is nothing less than shirt and ties. For those like me in which I have one boy and three girls dancing you can bet it is a challenge.
But more importantly than the dresses, is the atmosphere of which has always impressed me. Not only are the children experiencing a unique form of education, but you also find most of the parents are truly dedicated to promoting good behavior and a polite attitude amongst the children, as well as to the adults and judges.
Usually you find parents are busy insuring the dresses are in perfect form, wigs are in place, and the dads who attend these events usually are checking to see if the investment into their children’s future has yielded the results intended.
In short, this is not the beer guzzling, screaming from the sideline’s crowd you find in junior soccer, football, or baseball for that matter.
But this year at the Western Regional competition in Phoenix, Arizona we have seen a drastic change in the populous. In short the “White Trash” crowd has infiltrated Irish dance.
As I sat back and watched one incident after another I was amazed at how the somewhat elegant crowd was being reduced to nothing more than a weekend at the desert, beer cans in hand, rude and foul mouthed teenagers, with ignorant mothers watching their children’s rude behavior, condoning and defending it.
One 70 year old woman was trying to watch her grandson collect his award for his first successful competition at this level only to be called an “Old B-tch” (Female Dog) for asking the children to move out of the way.
This altercation soon reduced itself to the a war of words between the mother of the lovely trollop with the foul mouth and the 70 year old woman, of which was being accused of being rude to a snot nosed brat, a minor if you will.
All the idiot mother could say was that they were nice girls. B.S.
It was sad to see a parent so ignorant of her child’s behavior, and so willing to defend it with such narrow mindedness, suggesting a woman with more years on either of them as being rude in just wanting to watch her grandson get an award.
When the confrontation was over I casually asked the elderly lady where she had traveled from for this event, I was told CA.
A long way to go to meet a future Pole Dancer and her mom.
In yet another incident I was honored to witness a Drunk of the Month Club member get into a vendor’s face for absolutely nothing. As this event fell into play a parent was holding a glass filled with his favorite booze. He then decided to place it on the table of the vendor of which the vendor still had goods on the table of which he was concern could get damaged if the drink was knocked over or spilled.
The vendor simply asked this lounge lizard if he could remove the drink from the table. But to the vendors surprise this clown decided to start poking the vendor in the chest with his finger, threatening the vendor and behaving in an imposing nature, as if he was someone or something of importance.
Stunning!
From parents ripping up vendor flooring claiming it to be in the way, to parents being rude and obnoxious this was by far the lowest class group of people I have ever seen at one of these events.
Now I must add that not all of the people were rude but as is always the case in this world it takes just a few from the trailer park to ruin a good thing.
So here is my suggestion to the “White Trash” crowd, if you are going to attend these events and have your little Lulu or Billy Bob dance I suggest the family take an etiquette course covering manners and respect for others.
In addition please realize these events are supposed to be for the children, not a chance to stay in a nice resort where stealing the towels and ashtrays as well as peeing in the pool is frowned upon, not a privilege.
If all of this it too difficult to comprehend then I suggest you hit the nearest pawn shop and sell the dress, sign up for soccer, break out the ice chest and fill it with your favorite beer and snacks, head for the nearest park, plant your butt on a lawn chair, scream at your kids for an hour or so, and if all goes well suffer from sun stroke.
Oh, and do not forget to paint your face and take your large floppy foam hat and floppy foam #1 finger.
In short, Get Lost.

Our feis is 22 years old. We are holding it at the Holiday Inn Palo Verde, which has its very own movie theater. Kids can watch movies, under adult supervision while their siblings are dancing or while they are waiting to dance themselves. On Saturday evening we have a great pool party with a DJ, party games and barbeque burgers and dogs available for purchase. It is truly a great family weekend!

Registration is now open at Feisworx for the 5th annual Feis Orange County which will be held on February 23 and 24, 2008, at the Hilton Irvine/Orange County Airport Hotel. The preliminary schedule is all championship, championship specials, U15 and 15&O First Feis through Prizewinner and special competitions; Catherine O’Connor Memorial Special, music competition, and all adult competitions will be held on Saturday, February 22, 2008. All U6 through U14 First Feis through Prizewinner and all U5 through U14 special competitions; and all Team Competitions will be held on Sunday, February 23, 2008.
We have added some new specials this year including an “anything goes” fun charity special for autism research. Also, a memorial special has been added in memory of Catherine O’Connor, who passed away this last year. A very beautiful Waterford crystal perpetual trophy has been donated for this special.

Considering travelling in from East coast for this feis and visiting parents. I noticed that Prelim age groups are 2 year--are the groups usually small? Why do they do that? Also, it seems per syllabus that Prelims do hard, soft and set round--am I reading that correctly? Thanks for any info!

I was referred to the Wick School and also to Martin Percival's school both of which are in the metro area. Does anyone know anything about these schools? Their teachers? Their professionalism? I wish to protest the planned M3 motorway through the ancient grounds of Tara. As you are aware, expert archaeologists in Ireland and internationally have pointed out that Tara is not just constituted by the actual hill, but also by the surrounding landscape, which is extraordinarily rich in archaeological monuments. This is precisely the area the planned M3 will cut through, only 1 km from the hill itself.
You are also no doubt aware that the Tara landscape is recognised as a site of not only Irish, but world importance. In particular, it holds a significant place in European cultural heritage. I therefore believe that the Irish Government has a duty to act as the respectful custodian of Tara, and all other ancient Irish archaeological sites, and to protect them for posterity and for the appreciation of present and future citizens of not just Ireland, but of all the world.
I ask you to personally intervene in this issue, and to see to it that one of the alternative routes available for the M3 motorway is chosen instead. I ask you to ensure that Tara remains completely undisturbed and that it is treated with the respect due to both a national and international cultural treasure, "

Top notch pre-Oireachtas competition, plus two fabulous charitable specials (including the new Doernbecher children's hornpipe special where all-black attire will be required). And don't forget to sign up for our signature costume reel--16 bars of "anything goes". It's always the highlight of the day watching the amazingly creative costumes and choreography!!
One additional item of note--a special award of recognition will be given to the adult dancer scoring the highest cumulative points in their reel, hornpipe and traditional set rounds. We love our adults!

We hope you're planning on joining us October 27 & 28 for another fun-filled feis and top notch competition!! We are finalizing our syllabus & hope to be online with Feisworx very soon. Same great venue (Vancouver, WA Hilton/Convention Center), 6 adjudicators, and lots of great things in store, including 2 super charitable specials: the 3rd annual Carol Ford Memorial Trophy Special (slip jig special benefitting the OR & SW Washington Chapter of the Susan B. Komen Cancer Foundation) and a new Dancers for Children Doernbecher Special (a hornpipe special benefitting the Doernbecher Children's Hospital Foundation). Also, as a fun twist, the Doernbecher special will require black-only attire--black slacks & t-shirts for males and black skirts/t-shirts or dresses for females. No glitter, logos, words, or adornment--just a focus on dance without distraction! And don't forget our trademark costume reel--are you planning your costumes?

The Van Eire feis will be held Feb 24 & 25 at the Hilton Vancouver Metrotown. Metropolis (shopping city) is across the street and there are numerous restaurants within one or two blocks. Entries are now open on Feisworx and the room rate is valid until Feb 9. Hope to see you at Van Eire!

It will take place on Saturday, December 30 and Sunday, December 31, 2006.
Hotel reservations at the Radisson Hotel in Greentree (the location of the feis) must be made by December 8 to get the feis rate of $89.

It's official now, per Peter Smith, we must have class with TC once a week to be eligible for competition. I know many,many schools who are only doing it once a month. How is this going to affect them and who is going to police this? This is a stupid rule, how are they going to enforce it.
