In reply to: Harry 's message, "Jung and transpersonal psychology" on 07:36:14 06/09/04 Wed

Jung is the father of transpersonal psychology because he is the person that coined the term transpersonal. As you may know, in Jung's psychology he postulated a personal as well as collective unconscious. The collective unconscious is beyond the realm of the personal unconscious, thus it is transpersonal(trans means beyond). If my memory serves me well, he spoke of the transpersonal unconscious before it became known as the collective unconscious.

In addition, the term transpersonal has become synonomous with the word "spiritual", and Jung was delving deeply into the spiritual dimension of human experience far before it became fashionable to do so.

In my view, transpersonal psychology is simply trying to understand the nature of the soul (what he called the Self), as opposed to the nature of the mind, and Jung understood this before anyone in the Western psychological tradition.
