Yes, the investigation of peak experiences and other altered states of consciousness is an important aspect of transpersonal psychology. Abraham Maslow's research on peak experiences was critical in the development of his theory of metamotivation and to the establishment in the late 1960s of transpersonal psychology as a discipline distinct from humanistic psychology. Also relevant are Charles Tart's work on altered states of consciousness as well as research into meditation experiences and religious experience.
