Subject: Samuel Gibson b1886 help needed

My grandfather Samuel Gibson from Bethnal Green, London spent some time on Formidable. I don't have exact dates but think it it was from around 1895 - 1905. He then went on to join the Merchant Navy I think.
Can anybody tell me where I might find records confirming these facts and giving me some insight into what his life might have been like.
