Subject: DOG WATCH

Please can someone help me I am an ex CPO (wafu) on the south coast I drink in my local club with a lot of general service ex shipmates one of the guys sons recently went to plymouth for a training week with the sea cadets whilst he was there the subject DOG WATCHES came up, the son asked where the term dog watch came from, nobody seems to have a definitive answer, please help this ex wafu show up my general service mates with the right definition,
