Subject: 1901 trainee Francis Tom Rice

Hello, I just found my grand uncle on the 1901 census as "inmate, being trained for sea". His name was Francis Tom Rice from Didmarton, Glouces. Being listed as "inmate" I am guessing that he may not have been there voluntarily.

Does anyone have any information covering this period that might have any reference to him? I live in the US so am unable to visit the Bristol Records Office to look at the records held there.

Thanks for any help. I've learned a lot from this site and really enjoyed reading all about the National Nautical School.
Regards, Kathleen
