I do see your point about Christians who 'ram the gospel down people's throats' as it were, but I think a true Christian has no option but to have to say something, eventually. If they didn't, there would have to be good reason for them not to.
Have a look at this verse which speaks about Christians needing to speak out about their faith:
How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? Romans 10:14
