Subject: To Watch Grass Grow

Is to realize the speed at which I'm burning.
Cells dying at a rate that would scare redwood trees,
One century only hoped for as those trees have lived twenty.
My life already half gone while theirs is just beginning.

These eyes seeing only new mowed lawn that can start over,
While my mortality runs at a sprint finishing in death.
Of course we all have our days and times numbered,
Even grass and trees and yes those ancient rocks.

Nothing lasting forever except those spirits of us all,
And the essence of our minds truly being our eternal hearts.
Those chalices of our love ready to pour through infinity,
To even think of such things rockets me into nirvana.

Counting now each and every mortal breath granted to me,
For to savor the ecstasy of it is to accept the pain.
All of us carrying our crosses to be finally left on Earth,
Cut from trees so envious of our spirits timeless growth.
