That scarlet drop of life, still
On my bayonet;
Lying alone in a shallow foxhole coffin,
Judgments of those at home not yet screaming,
I too should have died to release them,
From guilt-ridden freedom.

If only they knew I had dreamed, wished,
For it to happen;
That final pain, so much easier to survive
Than fear. Having to kill to live,
Painting myself into coward's corner,
The way I saw it,
In bloody dying color.
