PART #80

Catherine walked back into the house, and up the stairs. She pulled out a couple dresses, sat down on a chair in the bedroom, and began ripping out some of the seams of the dresses to re-stitch. This would do until she could purchase some new material in Lake Charles to make something new. She heard Marguerite calling out to her from downstairs. She yelled, “Marguerite, I’m upstairs in our bedroom.”

Soon Marguerite, with Jean Baptiste on her left hip, was coming into the room “Are you all right Catherine?” she asked. “Of course I am all right, Marguerite,” she answered. “Why do you ask if I am all right?” Marguerite responded, “I saw Bow riding away, and it looked like he was prepared to be gone for a while. I just wanted to check on you, and make sure everything is all right.”

Catherine looked at Marguerite, and realized what a wonderful friend she had found in her. She was so grateful for her friendship. She said, “Marguerite, Bow has gone to Jennings to see if he can find the bank drafts that Peter Dunkirk took with him. It represents all the money that man has stolen from the plantation. We need that money to pay our employees, and also the men who had worked for Joshua when the saw mill was up and running. Those men who worked for Joshua have given Bow a week to come up with some money or they have threatened to come back, and cause trouble.” Marguerite said, “My goodness Catherine, what do you think they will do?” Catherine said, “I am not sure, but Bow told me they said it would not be a good situation if they had to come back.”

Marguerite saw that Catherine was ripping out some seams on a dress. She asked, “Catherine, what are you doing?” Catherine said, “I have gained a little weight, and need to let out this dress.” Marguerite smiled; and said, “Catherine, I knew you were pregnant. How far along are you?” Catherine answered, “I have a doctor’s appointment next week, and I will ask him at that point what he thinks.” Marguerite smiled and said, “You must have gotten pregnant right away. The same thing happened to me after Jean Pierre and I were married. I am glad it happened that way for now I have a part of Jean Pierre with me.” Catherine patted her hand and smiled, “Marguerite, you have a fine son, and you should be proud of him. I can see that he is a real joy to you.”

Catherine did not know if she should ask Marguerite about the relationship she had with George, but she decided she would approach the subject. She asked, “Marguerite, I can see that George has some feelings for you. How do you feel about him?” Marguerite blushed, than said, “Catherine, I think George is a fine man, but I told him I really needed to work through the emotions of losing my first husband before I become involved with another man. I know he cares for me, and I have feelings for him too, but I think it is too soon.” Catherine said, “I know you loved Jean Pierre very much, so I think you are wise in taking this relationship slow. I know George cares for you, and I do think he will be willing to wait for you until you are ready.”

Marguerite put Jean Baptiste on the floor, and sat down to chat some more with Catherine. She saw that Catherine had another dress lying on the bed so she asked if she planned to rip out the seams on that one as well. Catherine smiled and said, “Yes, that is my intention.” Marguerite offered to help her, so the ladies worked together, and chatted away the time.

Catherine said, “George seemed happy about you going with him, and helping him find a building to start up his silver business. He is a wonderful silversmith Marguerite. I have watched him many times when I was in England. My father and his father started the Sheffield Silversmith Business, and they have passed it down to their children. Of course I am a female, and that is not quite like having a son to pass the business down to in the next generation. George was getting pretty frustrated with my father and his father because they wanted to continue with the old ways of processing silver. George was aware they were falling behind but they were too set in their ways to change. I am confident George will be using the more modern ways here to process silver. I have a feeling he will do well financially Marguerite.”

Marguerite told Catherine she knew with the expansion of Lake Charles, and the quality of homes that were currently being built, there would be a demand for the products that George could make and offer for sale. She told Catherine she had shared that in conversation with George when they went to Lake Charles to look for property.

Catherine looked down at Jean Baptiste who had curled up on the floor at his mother’s feet. He had his thumb in his mouth, and was sound asleep. Catherine patted Marguerite’s arm, and pointed at Jean Baptiste. Marguerite got up, reached for the child, and carried him to her bedroom to place him in his crib.

To be continued...
