PART #11

The next morning when Catherine went to the hospital to see Boudreau, a policeman was in his room talking to him. He was asking Boudreau if he had ever before seen the man who stabbed him. Boudreau told him it all happened so fast; and it was pretty dark, but nothing seemed familiar about the man as far as his voice or what he could make out about his appearance. Catherine noticed the policeman wrote down the things that Boudreau had to say.

After the policeman left, Catherine asked Boudreau, “How are you feeling this morning?” He said, “I feel weak and pretty sore from the wound that was made.” Catherine said, “You have lost quite a bit of blood, so that would account for your weakness, and they had to stitch up the stab wound which is going to be sore for a while. I have a feeling Lucia will never leave her purse in a car again.” Boudreau said, “Mom, she has already been here this morning. She feels so badly about what happened, and says she feels she is to blame for the stabbing.” Catherine said, “I do feel badly for her, but this was not her fault. We all tend to forget at times. It could have happened to anyone. Besides, Lucia’s leaving her purse in the car did not force the man to try breaking into your car to steal it.”

Boudreau said, “You know Mom, I can’t understand why the man thought he had to stab me; why didn’t he just run away?” Catherine answered, “Boudreau, I have thought about that several times. Do you think the man did actually know you?” Boudreau said, “He may know me; but I surely don’t know him.” Catherine asked, “Was he a young man?” Boudreau answered, “I don’t think he was a young man.” “Why do you say that Boudreau?” asked Catherine. Boudreau replied, “The man didn’t run immediately. I fell to the ground, and I heard him sort-of laugh; and say, ‘That should take care of you Sonny.” He bent over me to see if I was dead, and I sure tried to play the part.”

Catherine asked, “Boudreau, did you tell all this to the policeman?” “Well, no, I didn’t tell him about the man bending over me, and saying those things. Do you think I should have told the police?” Catherine said, “Yes, I do believe they should be told these things, for it helps them to find the man. They don’t have any clues about this man, and this information helps them to narrow down their search to an older man.”

Bow walked into the room, and asked, “Boudreau, how are you doing this morning?” Boudreau repeated what he had told his mother about being weak and sore. Bow said, “I expect you are going to feel both those things for a while, but you’re young and you have a strong body, so you should heal pretty fast.” Catherine said to Boudreau, “Tell your father what you told me about the man who stabbed you.” Boudreau went through the stabbing scene once again, and Catherine said, “Bow, I told him he needed to tell the police about the man appearing to be older.” Bow agreed that would be a wise thing to do. He said, “I can call them, and ask them to send someone back here to the hospital; or I can stop in at the police department, and tell them what you said. It’s your call, Son.”

Boudreau told his dad he would like for him to stop at the police station, and tell them what he had said. Bow stayed for a few more minutes, gave Catherine a kiss on the cheek, and left for the police station. After he left, Boudreau became very still. Catherine said, “Boudreau, are you tired? Do you want me to leave so you can rest?” He said, “No, Mom, I think we need to talk.”

Catherine asked, “What is it that you wish to talk about Boudreau?” He said, “I want to talk about Dad and my job at the ship yards.” “Is there something wrong with your job at the ship yards?” asked his mother. Boudreau said, “Mom, I need to say something, but I don’t want to hurt you or Dad.” Catherine smiled; and said, “Boudreau, it is best to say what is in your heart.”

Boudreau said, “Mom, I hate the ship yards. I have tried to like my job, but I don’t. Dad has been so good and patient with me, but I just don’t care for that type of work.” Catherine asked, “Is there something else you would prefer doing?” Boudreau said, “I know this probably sounds crazy since I am already thirty-five years old, and have worked with Dad all this time. I would really like to go into business with George and Jean Baptiste.”

Catherine laughed, “Oh my Boudreau, this is a big shock to me. I had no idea you enjoyed working as s silversmith.” Boudreau said, “Mom, George says I am a natural, and Jean Baptiste said my work is outstanding. Do you think Dad will be terribly upset if I change jobs, and go to work with George and Jean Baptiste?

Catherine said, “Boudreau, your father will want you to do what you feel is right for you. If you don’t enjoy the ship yards, why should you spend your life doing something you don’t enjoy? It will be necessary for you to tell your dad, and I would recommend you do that soon. I am sure he will understand, and will want you to pursue what you feel is right for you.”
