PART #12

Hollingsworth Deverall lived a secret. Everyone thought he was a successful banker, and he was. Everyone thought he did well in real estate, and he did do well in real estate. Everyone knew he was wealthy; Hollingsworth saw to that, with the way he lived. No one in Lake Charles had a doubt about the money and power of Hollingsworth Deverall, but no one in Lake Charles knew the real Hollingsworth Deverall. Actually, the name Hollingsworth Deverall was one he had selected when he fled from Pittsburgh and its bloody mob history.

Sammie Pangallo had lived in the Italian neighborhood of Larimer in Pittsburgh, and then set up rackets in New Kensington. There had been so many gangland killings in Allegheny County that Sammie decided to take his family, and leave the area. He arranged his own death, making it look like someone had put out a contract on him and his family. Their home was blown up at 3:00 A.M. February 23, 1930. Sammie and his family said good-bye to Pennsylvania and hello to Lake Charles.

When Sammie arrived at Lake Charles, he and his wife, and daughter had a new name, and both women were forbidden to ever speak of their life in Pennsylvania. Lucia was told they were in the witness protection program; and the move was to protect their lives.

When Sammie and his family moved to Lake Charles, he brought suitcases of money with him. He had been liquidating for months, so his presence could not be traced. With the money, he purchased a bank, a luxury type home, and set himself up as a legitimate businessman. This continued for a year to help him get established in Lake Charles. He more or less purchased respectability. After the first year, he realized he missed the money he could make in crime, so he got involved in bootlegging, and importing and selling drugs.

Sammie purchased a small fleet of ships, and kept them bringing in drugs on a consistent basis. With the sale of drugs and alcohol during the prohibition period, Sammie was becoming extremely rich and powerful.

Sammie had told his wife, “Don’t you ever refer to me as Sammie again. From this day forward I am to be called Hollingsworth.” Lenore hated Lake Charles, and she missed her family and friends who remained in Pennsylvania and New York. Hollingsworth had forbidden her to contact anyone back east. He told her that would bring the mafia and the police down upon them. He constantly reminded her their lives were in danger if she slipped up even once.

After Hollingsworth and his family had been in Lake Charles for a period of time, Lenore took to drinking. She did not get acquainted with the people there for Hollingsworth was afraid she would slip up, and reveal their true identity. She felt isolated in her own home. She had no friends except for the bottle of bourbon she kept at hand at all times. Lenore had a suspicion that Hollingsworth was involved in illegal alcohol and drugs. She saw the men who came to their home late at night, and the packages of cash they turned over to Hollingsworth. When she tried to question him about getting involved in illegal alcohol and drugs, he told her to be quiet, have another drink, and go to bed. She was instructed to forget about those things, and the people she was seeing come to their home at all hours of the night.

There was one man in particular who gave Lenore the creeps. This man was an older man. She would judge he was at least sixty years old. Lenore could tell he was an educated man, but there was something suspiciously wicked about him. She had overheard him and Hollingsworth talking in the middle of the night about some legal problems. She could tell that Hollingsworth was trying to get on good terms with this man, and she overheard him say, “If you want that type of money, then you are going to owe me a really big favor.” “What is it you want?” asked the man. She heard Hollingsworth lower his voice, and some of the words she was unable to make out. She heard, “You will need to eliminate,” and she couldn’t hear the rest of the conversation.

She heard chairs scraping across the floor, and knew their conversation had been completed. She quickly moved up the stairs so she wouldn’t be seen. She wondered who or what Hollingsworth was telling this man to eliminate. She looked out from the upper level of their home, and saw the man scurrying to his car. Hollingsworth always kept their yard lighted up at night. She knew he was still fearful of someone discovering who he was, and coming after him. He wanted to make sure he saw anyone who drove up to their home. With the lighted lawn, it was possible for her to watch the man as he walked to his car, and drove away.

The next morning when Lenore awakened; she went down for breakfast, and found Lucia was talking to her father about Boudreau being stabbed. She watched Hollingsworth’s face as Lucia told him about the stabbing. He seemed so sympathetic to the terrible thing that had happened to Boudreau. Why did Lenore have this terrible feeling that Hollingsworth already knew about this before Lucia told him? Was that what he was arranging with that man who visited their home the night before? Did he want to eliminate Boudreau? She wondered what Lucia would do if she knew about that conversation between her father and the man of last night.

Lenore wondered what kind of monster she had married. How far would he go if someone got in his way? She hoped she would never have to see what he would do if that happened.

To be continued...
