Subject: Second Generation - Part #14

PART #14

The man sat in a stuffy hotel room in Lake Charles thinking about his plan. He had been away from Lake Charles for many years. Life had not been easy for him, and he had a plan to turn this city upside down. He had a grudge to settle, and if it took him the rest of his life to do so, it would be done.

When he returned to town six months ago, he determined he would find the person most powerful in the city, and see what he could learn about him. He needed someone who was powerful and rich to help him get his feet back on the ground. That man was Hollingsworth Deverall. He learned all he could learn about Deverall from observing what he did each day, watching his house at night, and watching his family members go about their business each day. He even knew that young pup who happened to belong to Bowregard and Catherine La Faye was dating the daughter of Hollingsworth Deverall.

There wasn’t much he didn’t know about Deverall; at least that is what he thought. But the secret that Deverall lived in Lake Charles was known by no one but his wife, and he was seeing to it she wasn’t talking. He made sure her bourbon bottle was always full. You might say, “Hollingsworth contributed to his wife’s alcoholism.” He figured if people knew she was a lush, she would lose credibility in the things she had to say. Who wanted to listen to and believe a lush? He actually played up his wife’s problem drinking to an inner circle of business associates to make sure people were aware of poor Hollingsworth, and what he had to contend with in his life.

This man had seen men like Hollingsworth in prison. They were ruthless, and thought of no one but themselves. No one crossed these men, unless they came in a group. If they had reached that point, they usually came with intent to do bodily harm. He had spent enough time with Hollingsworth to know it would not be wise to cross him. Well, he had no intention of crossing him; he needed him too much. But, he was going to get Hollingsworth to play into his hands; he just had to find the way.

He had come back to Lake Charles to take back what was his. He had lost the LeBleu plantation thirty-six years ago, and had spent many years in prison, and now, Peter Dunkirk knew, somehow he would find a way to get it back. For years Peter had suffered from a chronic condition called “Presupposed Brilliance.” This condition had caused his downfall thirty-six years ago, when he was apprehended in Jennings, Louisiana. He was placed in the Jennings jail in a cell that was adjoining the cell of the man he had hired to kill Joshua Sallier. The man actually sold him out, and Peter spent many years in prison.

Life had seemed so unfair to Peter. Why should some people have it so easy? What had Joshua Sallier ever done to deserve the plantation? His father had passed it down to him; but he certainly had not deserved it. What had Joshua done except to live a carefree life spending his daddy’s money? Peter had decided he was entitled to some of Joshua’s money; so little by little he began to steal from the plantation accounts. This, too, was all part of Peter’s chronic condition of “Presupposed Brilliance.” When the money had all been drained from Joshua’s accounts, Peter was in a state of panic. What if Joshua found out what he had done? After worrying about this for a month, he decided he would have Joshua killed in a card game. With the plantation in a state of financial ruins, he would buy it back for a song.

Things did not go as Peter had programmed; instead of him getting away with all the money to Europe, with the thought of living there while the estate was purchased, his condition caused him to put a wrong address on all the bank notes. When the postmaster realized the mistake Peter had made, he found Peter had left town. So, he took all the bank notes to the sheriff, who in turn, took them out to the plantation for Catherine.

With the money being returned to the plantation, and Peter sitting in jail at Jennings, his plan was foiled. Everything worked out for Bow and Catherine La Faye, and Peter spent many years in prison. Bowregard and Catherine La Faye took over the plantation that Peter intended to get back. He didn’t care what it cost him to get it back. No cost was too great.

The tragedy of all this is that Peter never seemed to understand he was not entitled to the plantation. There was no reason for him to even think that way, but again, Peter lived on a different plain then most people. Who knew why Peter thought the way he thought? It made no sense to anyone but Peter.

To be continued...
