As touch screen or internet voting becomes more stable/possible there will be less and less reason not to let voters simply rank as many candidates as they like. If you end up with 10 candidates then the voter should be allowed to rank all 10 candidates. Touch screen and internet voting would allow the voter to do this easily. Still voters are lazy and although some people may feel disenfranchised with only 3 choices, most voters (unfortunately) don't want to have more choice. Therefore, an option should exist for the voter to acknowledge that they only wish to rank X number of candidates. If the voter only wants to rank 1 candidate then they can be given the ability to select an option to that effect. Although their vote may not be counted in the finally tally (due to their candidate having been eliminated) they will have been given the opportunity to rank everyone and the option to not exercise that opportunity.
