maybe I am a reconstructionist (or a deconstructionist), but I happen to believe that the premise for going forward should be that all "people" (not just "men" -- or white men or land-owning white men or people to have been born after a certain year on a specific tract of land) are created equal.

there is a quote that I have saved for some time now -- "We despise all reverences and all objects of reverence which are outside the pale of our list of sacred things. And yet, with strange inconsistency, we are shocked when other people despise and defile the things which are holy to us." -- Mark Twain in Following The Equator. (see also: http://www.sfheart.com/marktwai.html)

how can I expect another person to respect my fellow countrymen (term used collectively) when I act as if I do not respect them myself?

did anyone ever convince me of anything by insulting me? what are my chances of convincing any of you on any given point I might support if I first insult you?
