All societies will strive towards greater hights, and as such all of them will collapse. This isn't a theory, this is a fact.

All that we can really do in the interim is try to moderate that collapse through careful management (on the community level (careful not to say government there)), and even more carefully manage ourselves and those close to us.

An example I am particularly fond of is transportation. We have a couple of choices: walking, biking, public transport, carpooling and driving ourselves. It's easy to rule out driving yourself since there is almost no circumstance where hauling 2-tons of metal around with you makes much of any sense. But think about the cost benefits of some other forms of transport - huge over the course of time especially if you choose to be self-propelled (I prefer two wheels, 27-speeds and the truth!) and you are able to factor in the huge positive health factor.

While this example is obvious, and I am obviously biased, the truth is that these little choices occur in almost every aspect of our lives and if we maximize our expenditures in the same fashion in as many different areas of life as we can then we put ourselves squarely ahead of the game.
