Well my problem stems from something that I gleaned from reading the posts that I had missed while I was away. It appeared that the general theme of pescimism had taken hold and so I was prompted to struggle 'gainst the darkened maw of despair that is conservatism.

Whether I was right or not, I had the impression that some held a belief that we as a people tended toward self destruction. So I posted a blanket post (redundant?) addressing the major issues. I am really more of a moderate than I may appear so I believe that politicians have negligible effect on the American Economy. Free Enterprise adapts, survives, and no matter what poloticians do to, in the end all they do is either tap the breaks or get the hell out of the way.

As far as our current state and how it compares to 50 years ago, I think you are quite mistaken. However, rather than get into a debate over something so very highly subjective I will simply restate a point that I made many posts ago:

The Wealthy have actually increased their net worth over the years. Just do the research.

I haven't the inclination to debate semantecs regarding the quality of life enjoyed by the middle class then vs. now, largely because I have no way of knowing what was considered luxurious back then. However, the facts do suggest that the opposite of what you stated is true; the middle class is actually disappearing.
