I find your lack of vision disturbing, Rob. However, rather than serve up a hearty helping of ideological spew, I will simply use history to illuminate your sad, dark, little world.

Please forgive the above outburst, I couldn't help myself. I feel so strongly about people who think in such short sighted terms as you just demonstrated in your response to my post, Rob, that I wish I had had an "E-Pimp Slap" button to use on you.

My father, damn his soul to hell, used to ask me such things all the time. All I wanted was a simple, four thousand dollar Apple Macintosh. All he could ever do is ask me what possible gain such a colossal waste of money could give me. It was just a stupid little machine, all it was really good for was playing games... mainly learning ones... and if I wanted to play games, I had that Atari and the Intellivision sitting in the cedar chest in the living room. I was very pleased to turn him down a couple years ago, and remind him that I really wanted that Mac, when he came to me asking for computer lessons so he could track some of the stocks that his broker had invested some of his retirement money in.

As for the exploits of a lunar colony, it is difficult to narrow down the economic gains. Paricularly to something tangible for those with so little foresight. Your question of what is there to exploit is one that may very well have been asked by many citizens during the early days of space exploration. Space exploration has given rise the technology used in our telecommunications. It no longer takes weeks or months to get information from one continent to another, it takes seconds. How many people do you know who have DSS or the dish network? Even Automobiles are being released with Satelite Based communications like GPS and satellite radio.

One immediate economic exploit for a lunar colony would be tourism. Who wouldn't want to be the first kid on their block to have spent a weekend on the moon? Now, when this actually becomes a reality, this will drive technology to find Cheaper, more efficient, and more reliable means to get tourists up to the moon.... and thus begins the trickle-down effect of benefits to a lunar colony.
